Historical Information

UCR ARTS encompasses two renovated buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in downtown Riverside.
The California Museum of Photography’s art deco façade sits adjacent to the Culver Center of the Arts, originally built in 1895 and renovated in 1924 to include Spanish Renaissance details. Both buildings were department stores in their early years as commercial destinations along Main St. before the thoroughfare became a pedestrian-only promenade.
Next time you visit us, we encourage you to sit and relax outside in the tree-lined mall in front of the museum’s entrance and admire the architecture of our historic buildings before or after you view our exhibitions inside.
When you are done visiting us, our downtown location serves as a great jumping off point for a walking tour of Riverside’s rich cultural and architectural history. Visit https://www.riversideca.gov/todo-landmarks.asp for additional inspiration.
