By WWII, she left the limelight of New York and came to California, where, unlike many who came seeking fame, she came to find obscurity.
“In December 1900, she came to New York City at the tender age of 15 as an artist’s model, with nothing but her looks, and became an overnight sensation. To the reporters who followed her mercurial rise as a celebrity…hers seemed a fairy-tale existence. Nesbit generated more newspaper sales and publicity than William Randolph Hearst himself could have imagined. She was a modern-day Cinderella who overnight became the glittering girl model of Gotham.” – Paula Uruburu, “The Love Triangle,” American Experience, PBS.
Stanford White was a famous architect and bon vivant who designed Madison Square Garden, Tiffany’s, and the Washington Square Arch, among other buildings. He first saw Nesbit performing in the musical, Florodora, and became her benefactor, providing her with an apartment and showering her with lavish gifts. Some claim that he drugged and raped her, though others dispute this, but, certainly, the two became lovers. She also had a relationship with the actor John Barrymore among others.
A wealthy gentleman, Harry Thaw, became enamored of Nesbit. Thaw took Nesbit and her mother on a trip to Europe before marrying Nesbit in 1905. By all accounts, Thaw was mentally unstable, abusive, and likely a drug addict. One evening, he and Nesbit were attending a show on the rooftop garden at Madison Square Garden when Stanford White arrived and took his usual seat. Thaw, who had come to believe that White had previously corrupted his wife, approached White and shot him in the face. The Washington Times declared the next day, “Harry Thaw Kill Stanford White in Jealous Rage Over Actress Wife.” Thaw was tried twice before being found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to an institution for the criminally insane.
