This photograph celebrates the accomplishments of Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. Between the first flight of the Wright Brothers (1903) and the landing on the moon (1969), a mere 66 years transpired. Other than lighter-than-air flight, which was somewhat unpredictable, humankind went from being earthbound to walking on another celestial body – one of the great achievements of the 20th century.
“On July 20, 1969, Buzz and Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo 11 moonwalk, becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world. An estimated 600 million people – at that time, the world’s largest television audience in history – witnessed this unprecedented heroic endeavor.
Upon returning from the moon, Buzz was decorated with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and numerous awards all over the world. Named after Buzz are Asteroid “6470 Aldrin” and the “Aldrin Crater” on the moon. In 2011 along with his Apollo 11 crewmates Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins, he received the Congressional Gold Medal. Dr. Aldrin is President of Starcraft Enterprise, Laguna Beach, and has live in California for many years. The accomplishments of Apollo 11, and the rest of the space program, would have been impossible without the aerospace industry in California, including such institutions as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology.
Weingarten was born in New York City and moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980s. He currently lives in Malibu.
