When Archer took this photograph, which was made from a composite of two negatives, he did not realize that a fly had been sitting on his finger. When he discovered it in the negative, he was delighted by the surprise. The self-portrait appeared on the dustjacket of Fred Archer on Portraiture, a book published in 1948.
Archer was a member of the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Camera Club. He taught at the Art Center School, and he also started his own school of photography. Though Ansel Adams alone is often credited with devising the Zone System, he developed it in partnership with Fred Archer.
