Bristol, who was a Life magazine photographer, invited John Steinbeck to tour the migrant camps with him for the purpose of developing an article for the magazine. They spent seven weeks travelling together in the winter of 1937-38, but the magazine declined the article. Instead, Steinbeck decided to write a book about the camps, resulting in The Grapes of Wrath, a literary classic.
When the movie was made in 1940, the filmmakers used Bristol’s photographs as guides for casting. The fact that Tom Joad looks like Henry Fonda, or the other way around, is not coincidental.
Once the novel was released, the line between fact and fiction became blurred. For example, there was no actual Joad family. Life Magazine published Bristol’s photographs using fictional captions from The Grapes of Wrath. Bristol, himself, began to title his works with the same fictional captions.
