Window to the Mind

Lorna Katz (b. 1960)

It is often said that the eyes are the windows to the mind. Both psychiatrists and spiritualists have mentioned this in their published journals, although spiritualists will say that the eye is the window to the soul. The composition of Window to the Mind has both elements. The opening features samples from a Theremin, representing the psychiatric approach, which instills science, accompanied by sound effects of bamboo chimes and water droplet sounds, thereby evoking the spiritual side of the piece. There is more than one melody played towards the end, which represents how the mind can easily be distracted by outside influences.
