Join us to hear from Douglas McCulloh, Interim Executive Director of UCR ARTS, Senior Curator, and curator of the exhibition, Fauxtography: Lying with Photographs, An Analytical Framework. A Q&A portion will be moderated by Nikolay Maslov, Curator of Film & Media Projects at UCR ARTS. Fauxtography is on view at UCR ARTS’ Culver Center of the Arts through July 2, 2023.

We live in a golden age of lying. Photographs are now crucial building blocks in the superstructure of falsehood, their deceptive powers amplified by vast circulation on the internet. Fauxtography: Lying with Photographs presents an analytic framework for understanding how photographs can be induced to lie. Seven categories of photographic lies are illustrated by “type specimens” collected from across the internet. They are sterling examples of photographic falsehoods, signposts for a world where we no longer think seeing is believing.
