Louis Paulhan was a pioneering French aviator who won all of the flying awards at the first international air meet in the United States, held in Dominguez Hills, California, in 1910. “Attendance at the air meet surpassed all expectations. During the 10 days of the meet an estimated 226,000 spectators converged on Dominguez Field. The amateur photographer, Knabenshue, was an engineer and pilot who flew his dirigible over the air meet and photographed from the air as well as from the ground. “Knabenshue made many successful airship flights in 1905 at state fairs and also engaged in promoting public exhibitions. In August 1905 he flew his 69 foot long Toledo II airship at Central Park in New York City, stopping all business and street traffic. Knabenshue’s third dirigible was completed and flown in exhibitions at Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island, Worcester, Massachusetts and London, Ontario in 1907… In January 1910 Knabenshue participated in the First International Air Meet at Dominques Field, Los Angeles, racing his dirigible against others.” – The National Aviation Hall of Fame
