This was taken in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Exactly who these men were is unclear, though they have been variously described as lookouts for a gambling den or as detectives, among other explanations. It is an intriguing and mysterious photograph. The men appear to be together, one dressed in a light coat and the other in a dark one, but they gaze in opposite directions – at what, and for what purpose?
