As the Socialist candidate for mayor, Jack London received only 245 votes and lost the race. London died at age 40 and his short life “embodied the frenzied modernization of America between the Civil War and World War I. With his thirst for adventure, his rags-to-riches success story, and his progressive political ideas, London’s stories mirrored the passing of the American frontier and the nation’s transformation into an urban-industrial global power.” Kenneth Brandt, Smithsonian Magazine, 2016.
At the end of the recently released James Bond film, No Time to Die, a quote is read which appeared earlier in one of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, You Only Live Twice. The quote is from Jack London, and it first appeared in a San Francisco paper the year that London died (1916): “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”
